Oh crap! Rappler least trusted among elite PH media brands

Despite being one of Facebook’s designated fact checkers, Rappler is the least trusted among well funded media organizations in the Philippines, according to a think tank based in the United Kingdom.

Research by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism showed Rappler at the low end of media brands trusted by Filipinos, with a 49 percent trust rating and 28 percent distrust rating. 23 percent neither trust nor distrust the online news site.

Based on data from the report, Rappler’s net trust rating is a measly 21 percent (49% trust rating minus 28% distrust rating). It is virtually tied with Bulgar at the bottom rung of trusted Filipino media brands. The tabloid has a net trust rating of 20 percent (43% trust rating minus 23% distrust rating).

The Reuters Institute study named GMA Network as the most trusted media organization, with a trust rating of 73 percent. It is followed by TV5 with a 68 percent trust rating; Manila Bulletin and Philippine Star, with 68 percent; Philippine Daily Inquirer and DZMM with 67 percent; DZRH with 66 percent; DZBB and regional or local newspapers with 64 percent; ABS-CBN and PTV with 61 percent; Radyo Pilipinas with 59 percent; and Abante with 50 percent.

Abante, Politiko’s sister publication, has a net trust rating 32 percent, way better than Rappler’s.

The Reuters Institute said its data for the study was gathered from urban areas, which means richer and more connected media consumers were represented better.
