Duterte’s ‘job’ to gather evidence vs Maria Ressa – Roque

By Prince Golez

Compiling evidence against veteran journalist Maria Ressa, editor and CEO of news website Rappler, is part of President Rodrigo Duterte’s job, his spokesman said.

Duterte had earlier said he was gathering information about Ressa and threatened to expose her as a fraud.

“Well, iyan naman po ang trabaho ng Ehekutibo – patuparin ang batas,” according to Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque.

“So hayaan na po natin ang imbestigasyon, at sa takdang panahon ay ilalabas naman po iyan,” Roque said during his virtual presser Thursday.

In a taped public address aired on state-run PTV-4 early Wednesday, Duterte said the 2018 TIME Person of the Year and his staunch critic would get a taste of her own medicine “one of these days.”

Earlier, Ressa and former researcher-writer Reynaldo Santos Jr. were found guilty of cyber libel charges by the Manila Regional Trial Court Branch 46, a verdict many described as a blow to press freedom in the country.
