By Prince Golez

President Rodrigo Duterte has named Brigadier General Jose Eriel Niembra, former commander of the Presidential Security Group (PSG), as the new head of the Intelligence Service of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (ISAFP), Malacañang announced.

Niembra replaced Brigadier General Oliver Artuz, who retired from the service Friday.

“We wish (Brigadier General) Niembra all the best in his new assignment,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in a statement Saturday.

Niembra, a member of the Philippine Military Academy “Sambisig” Class of 1991, served as PSG commander from May 2018 until February 2020.

Under his leadership, the PSG provided security to Duterte during the 2019 elections, the 3rd and 4th State of the Nation Address, the 30th Southeast Asian Games, and the 1st Presidential Silent Drill Competition.

Niembra was also deputy commander of Task Force Davao when Duterte was mayor.
