President Rodrigo Duterte’s trip to Mindanao on Friday to defuse any tension between the police and Army over the shooting incident in Jolo is a good move, Sen. Panfilo Lacson said Saturday.
Lacson reiterated no one will win if the police and Army in the area are at odds, with terrorists and other enemies of the state the ones that stand to gain.
“Maganda kasi he took time to even fly to Zamboanga para kausapin ang police officials and Army officials na magkalma kayo kasi walang makikinabang dito kundi mga terrorists, ang mga kalaban ng Pilipino, kababayan natin, enemies of the state. Kaya mabuti ang move na talagang pumunta siya roon,” he said in an interview on DWIZ radio.
But Lacson also reiterated his praise for the Armed Forces of the Philippines for immediately rectifying false claims that policemen tampered with evidence at the scene of the fatal shooting of four Army agents in Jolo.
On Thursday, Army spokesman Col. Ramon Zagala issued a clarification on a CCTV footage circulating online, showing a crowd gathering at the scene of the incident where four Army agents tracking down suspected terrorists were gunned down by Jolo policemen.
Zagala said the crowd was composed of responding soldiers and not policemen. He said the responding soldiers were part of a “takedown team” of two suspected Abu Sayyaf bombers.
The footage had showed the responding team checking the bodies of the slain Army agents, with one taking something out of the sport-utility vehicle the Army men rode in.
Reports said former Armed Forces chief of staff Ricardo Visaya posted the CCTV footage on his Facebook account, claiming the situation was mishandled by police.
The National Bureau of Investigation is looking into the incident.
“Pero nakakabilib din ang PA, ang AFP in general. Di ba may lumabas na viral ang sinasabi mga pulis ginalaw ang crime scene, nag-manipulate. Kung salbahe ang AFP di sila kikibo, pagagalitin nila ang tao para magalit sa pulis. Sila mismo nag-correct di na naghintay ng maagang panahon, kinorek na nila hindi mga pulis yan kundi mga Army rin na nag-respond,” Lacson said.
“So napakagandang gesture ginawa ng AFP na hindi na nila pinag-init pa ang damdamin ng kasamahan nila sa AFP at taumbayan by immediately dousing the fire para sabihing mali ang sa video, actually mga tauhan namin yan,” he added.
