Ping: Senate probe of Jolo incident should address PNP-AFP ‘miscommunication’

Eliminating the “miscommunication” between the Philippine National Police and Armed Forces of the Philippines should be a priority of the Senate once it investigates the fatal shooting of four Army agents by police in Jolo.

Sen. Panfilo Lacson said this Saturday after noting his initial finding of the incident showed there was “miscommunication” between the Army agents and the police.

“Initial information lang itong na-gather ko na talagang may miscommunication between the elements of the PA and PNP sa Jolo. Yan ang dapat maiwasan sa susunod kung magkaroon man dito ng legislative inquiry paano mapapatibay ang lateral coordination sa ground pag magkakaroon ng operation,” he said in an interview on DWIZ radio.

Earlier this week, four Army agents going after a terrorist target were gunned down by police in Jolo. The National Bureau of Investigation is looking into the incident.

Lacson said he was disturbed over the incident because this was not the first time police and soldiers engaged in a “misencounter.”

“Nakakalungkot lang kasi parang simple coordination hindi naisakatuparan … kasi nagtanong ako roon, may kakilala tayo sa area kung anong background,” he said.

He also discounted the possibility of a so-called “unholy alliance” between the police in Jolo and two terrorists the Army was tracking down.

“But when I started my own investigation, di naman ganoon ang background. Mabuti na lang at hindi ganoon,” he said.
