The Archdiocese of Manila has announced the suspension of religious activities from August 3 to 14 in response to the medical community’s call for Metro Manila to be placed under enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) due to the continued rise in COVID-19 cases.
Bishop Broderick Pabillo, apostolic administrator and auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Manila, said only online religious activities will continue in the next two weeks.
“We will also use this time to evaluate our church response to the pandemic and see how we can improve them,” he said in a statement Saturday (August 1).
Pabillo said the Catholic Church understands the medical community’s call for ECQ in Metro Manila, where majority of COVID-19 cases have been recorded.
ECQ is the strictest form of lockdown, where the population’s movement is restricted except for essential activities.
Metro Manila is currently under General Community Quarantine (GCQ) until August 15.
“They call for a period of time to reassess the response that we as a country have to this pandemic. It seemse that the current responses are not working because the cases are rising after four and a half months of quarantine,” Pabillo said.
The prelate said all stakeholders must come together to evaluate and improve the response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Malacanang said members of the Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) met Saturday to discuss healthcare workers’ concerns. Their recommendation will be submitted to President Rodrigo Duterte.
