‘Di sila kaaway! Nancy Binay: Health workers don’t deserve tongue lashing from Duterte

Senator Nancy Binay has bucked at President Rodrigo Duterte’s criticism of healthcare workers after they called for Metro Manila’s return to enhanced community quarantine (ECQ).

In an interview on ANC Tuesday (August 4), Binay said healthcare workers shouldn’t be viewed as enemies.

“For me, our health workers didn’t deserve that kind of lashing,” she said.

Duterte warned healthcare workers in a speech aired late Sunday (August 2) not to “demean government” after they publicly aired their grievances about the government’s response to the pandemic.

Healthcare workers appealed for Metro Manila’s return to ECQ as hospitals were already “overwhelmed” by the surge in COVID-19 patients.

Duterte responded to their request by placing the capital, as well as the provinces of Laguna, Rizal, Bulacan and Cavite on modified ECQ (MECQ) until August 18.

Binay appealed to the Inter-Agency Task Force for Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) to hold talks with healthcare workers in the next two weeks to hear their suggestions on how to improve the government’s response to the pandemic.

“We have to weeks, a two-week window, wherein we can correct things and hopefully, yung IATF, will constantly be in touch with our health workers with our doctors para tuloy-tuloy yung dialogue nila on how we can find the solution to this problem,” she said.
