Eyes wide open: Drilon gives Gierran tips to end ‘high level’ corruption in Philhealth

Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon hopes former National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) director Dante Gierran will finally rid the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (Philhealth) of corruption as its new president and chief executive officer (CEO).

In a statement Tuesday (September 1), Drilon said Gierran will be dealing with “high-lebel and deeply embedded corruption which is perfected over time by corrupt syndicates in Philhealth.”

“He should keep his eyes open– never blink– to corruption. A piece of advice transparency is an effective tool to prevent corruption,” the senator said.

Drilon advised Gierran to upgrade Philhealth’s information technology system to minimize corruption and implement a “top-to-bottom” reorganization.

“Get rid of the corrupt and the incompetent. We should put behind bars those who are part of the syndicates,” he said.

Duterte appointed Gierran to Philhealth after asking Ricardo Morales to resign as Philhealth chief amid parallel investigations on the alleged anomalies within the state health insurer.

In a briefing with Cabinet members attended by Gierran Monday night (August 31), Duterte said the former NBI chief should devote the next two years to fighting corruption.

“Maghanap kayo ng makukulong,” the President said.
