Napakakuripot na budget! Imee Marcos: Lawmakers at odds over P162B stimulus package

Lawmakers are having a hard time deciding which sectors should receive the highest allocations under the P162-billion stimulus package named Bayanihan to Recover as One bill, Senator Imee Marcos said Wednesday (August 19).

Marcos, who is part of the bicameral conference committee discussing the bill, said the stimulus package is simply too small to fund key projects.

“Napakakuripot nitong budget na to. Hirap na hirap kami. There’s too little to fight over because it’s simply impossible to accommodate everyone’s request,” she said in an interview over ANC.

Marcos said only P140 billion of the P162-billion funding will be readily available once the bill is signed into law. It was the Department of Finance which set a cap on the amount for the stimulus package based on available government funds.

The senator said several sectors would’ve to make do with the remaining P112 billion in the Bayanihan 2 bill as P50 billion will already go to the banks for the provision of subsidies and loans to affected businesses.

“Ang haba po ng listahan. Sinabi nila na kapag maikli ang kumot, bumaluktot. Kapag wala nang kumot, mag-tumbling na po,” Marcos said.

The senator suggested diverting travel funds under the 2020 national budget to fund recovery programs which will not receive adequate budget under the Bayanihan 2 bill.

“I don’ think anyone would travel so all the travel expense, all these things, ibibigay na natin sa tao,” Marcos said.
