Palace thumbs down P5,000 aid proposal for poor: ‘Hindi sapat ang pondo’

By Prince Golez

Malacañang does not support the proposal of Vice President Leni Robredo to give P5,000 monthly cash aid for four months to 10 million poorest Filipino households.

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said the government is running low of funds and no longer has enough money to support low-income families.

“Kung pupuwede po, bibigyan lahat ‘no pero wala nga po tayong sapat na pondo para diyan,” Roque said in his virtual presser Thursday.

“Pati po iyong ating Bayanihan II ay limited to P165 (billion), mayroon din pong probisyon na ayuda doon ‘no pero kakaunti lang po iyon compared doon sa binigay natin noong nauna under Bayanihan I,” he said.

Under Bayanihan to Heal as One Act (Bayanihan I), 18 million poor families affected by the coronavirus pandemic received between P5,000 to P8,000 cash subsidies for two months.

Asked if he was rejecting Robredo’s suggestion, Roque told reporters: “Hindi po sapat ‘no dahil alam ninyo naman po in public finance, hindi ka pupuwedeng gumastos nang wala kang source of the possible expenditure.”
