Senator Imee Marcos has advised the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) to give returning overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) technical assistance, not just money, to start a new business.
In an interview over UNTV Friday (August 28), Marcos said OFWs need help in starting their own business since they are more experienced as employees.
“Para maging self-employed, o mag-invest, mag-umpisa ng negosyo, alamin kung paano kikita at ma-maintain ang negosyo, napakahirap nung mga skills na ‘yun,” she said.
Marcos said DOLE could help returning OFWs by putting up a database containing their skills, as well as businessmen or entities they could partner with for their business.
“Gawa tayo ng listahan ‘yung mga negosyante na naghahanap ng tauhan, naghahanap ng investor, co-invest muna, partner partner muna. Hangga’t malaman nila kung saan sila patungo,” she said.
Marcos said lack of business know-how often ends up in OFWs falling for scams or wasting their savings.
“‘Yung pinaghirapan nila,at unti-unti nilang inipon, eh talaga namang – ito nga, ito ‘yung malaking problema, pagdating sa bahay, pagdating sa kanila, sa probinsya nila, ini-iscam ng kung sino-sino. Kung minsan ‘yung pinagkakatiwalaan pa nila, mga kamag-anak, kapitbahay, mga pulitiko,” she said.
