Oriental Mindoro Rep. Doy Leachon on Wednesday confirmed that Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano and Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco reached an agreement to honor their 15-21 term-sharing deal during their meeting with President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday night.
“Both parties agreed to leadership change on October 14 in front of the President,” Leachon said in an ANC interview.
“Yes, it’s true that the President began the discussion by saying the parties should honor their word,” said Leachon, one of Velasco’s chief allies in the House.
The congressman, who was in the meeting, said the President did not want to impose but let both parties come to some terms.
Leachon said Cayetano had wanted to remain Speaker at least until his birthday on October 28, while Velasco noted his birthday was on November 9.
But the two “agreed” on October 14 as the date of the transition, he said.
“Cayetano said, sana speaker pa rin siya sa birthday niya, October 28. Sabi naman ni Cong. Velasco, eh birthday niya November 9. Both of them agreed on the October 14 date,” Leachon said.
