Senator Manny Pacquiao will fight Irish mixed martial arts star Conor McGregor next year to raise funds for COVID-19 patients, his office confirmed Saturday (September 25).
Jake Joson, Pacquiao’s special assistant, said the fight will be held “for the sake of all the Filipino COVID-19 victims.”
“Malaking portion ng kikitain ni Sen MP sa kanyang susunod na laban eh e donate nya sa mga victim ng COVID,” Joson said in a text message.
Pacquiao’s aide, however, said the eight-division world boxing champion doesn’t want to talk about his upcoming bout yet because the country is still in the middle of a pandemic.
“His main focus right now is to help here and there, providing relief, shelter, money and food, among other necessities,” he added.
Sean Gibbons, president of Manny Pacquiao Promotions, described the fight between the senator and McGregor as a “tremendous global event” to Agence France-Presse.
McGregor said in a tweet that his fight against Pacquiao will happen in the Middle East.
“Anyway all water under the bridge who gives a fook. I’m boxing Manny Pacquiao next in the Middle East,” he said.
Pacquiao was last in the boxing ring in 2019, where he defeated American Keith Thurman for the WBA welterweight crown.
