Responding to a new generation of clients, both in age and attitude (according to the carmaker, the average age of its owners is now 43), Rolls-Royce has now released its all-new Ghost. The super luxury sedan not only fulfills the hallmarks of the brand, but also carries a sense of dynamism as well.
With only the Spirit of Ecstasy and the umbrellas carried over, the all-new Ghost rides on a new aluminum spaceframe architecture used also by the Phantom and Cullinan (previously it shared its platform with the BMW 7 Series). Compared to its predecessor, it has grown to 5,546 mm (up 89 mm) in length, and 1,978 mm in width (up 30 mm). It has also enabled Rolls-Royce to fit all-wheel drive, all-wheel steering, and a completely redesigned suspension which the company dubs the Planar system.
Under the hood is a 6.75-liter twin-turbocharged V12 engine. Mounted behind the front axle, it makes for a 50/50 weight distribution. It delivers a relaxed 563 horsepower and 850 Nm of torque from just 1,600 rpm. In terms of raw performance, it can hit 100 km/h in about 5 seconds. Yet, unlike other applications, Rolls-Royce has worked hard to reduce its engine’s aural presence in the cabin by incorporating larger porting to its air intake. The Ghost also applies more than 100 kilograms of sound deadening.
The Ghost’s styling is more minimalist, a change of direction from its once opulent styling. It draws the attention using details such as the body being rendered as one clean, expansive piece. It flows seamlessly from the A-pillar, over the roof, and backwards to the rear of the car, a nod to the one-piece coach-built Rolls-Royce models of the past.
While self-closing doors have been a Rolls-Royce trademark since the first modern Phantom, the Ghost goes one step further by allowing owners to open the doors with power assistance. Built-in sensors check for potential hazards, and can even compensate for opening or closing on inclines.
Inside, the Ghost takes on a minimalist appearance with traditionally luxurious material such as leather, open-pore wood taking centerstage. Yet, it comes fitted with the world’s most advanced air filtration system as well as an “Illuminated Fascia” which adds a glowing Ghost nameplate surrounded by 850 stars on the passenger side of the dashboard. And fulfilling the requirements of its technologically-driven owners, it comes with an industry-leading 7x3 high-resolution heads-up display, Wi-Fi hotspot, and the very latest navigation and entertainment systems.
Rolls-Royce says deliveries of the redesigned Ghost will start globally in the first quarter of 2021. Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Manila is now accepting reservations with price depending on application.
