The proposed budget for 2021 should not be held hostage as the country continues to grapple from the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, according to Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles.
In an interview with CNN Philippines Friday, Nograles said the late budget approval will affect government response to Covid-19.
He was reacting to the suspension of House session until November 16 after the approval of the proposed budget for 2021 on second reading.
“We cannot hostage the budget. We cannot afford any delays in the budget because nakapaloob po sa budget ng 2021 ang response natin against Covid-19 [para] matugunan ang problema ng kagutuman at kahirapan at i-jumpstart natin ang atin ekonomiya para makapagtrabaho ang ating mga kababayan,” said Nograles.
Thursday night, President Rodrigo Duterte asked the House of Representatives to fix its leadership problem and pass the proposed 2021 budget “legally and constitutionally.”
