President Rodrigo Duterte isn’t impressed by Public Works Secretary Mark Villar’s credentials since the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) continues to be hounded by corruption allegations.
In a public address aired Tuesday (October 27), Duterte announced the creation of a task force that will investigate corruption in government. He said it will have “special focus” on DPWH.
“Let me state here and now that I have nothing against Secretary Villar. He is one of the hardworking at maraming accomplishments si Secretary Villar. But you know accomplishments alone to me should not suffice para na sa akin, hindi na kay Secretary Villar, because it’s not his job to be running after crooks,” he said.
“But it behooves upon me to see to it na itong corruption mahinto kung hindi ma — at least maputol na nang kaunti. So we are expanding the investigation sa corruption sa agriculture with special focus sa DPWH,” Duterte added.
Presidential Anti-Corruption Commission Commissioner Greco Belgica recently accused unnamed DPWH officials of conniving with some lawmakers to engage in corrupt activities related to the implementation of infrastructure projects.
Belgica claimed lawmakers receive at least 10 percent of the contract price for the projects, and DPWH district engineers will also get a share. He, however, refused to name the legislators allegedly involved in corruption, saying an initial report will be submitted by the PACC to Duterte this week.
