Malacañang has defended the Department of Education’s purchase of 166 new service vehicles which costs P1.5 million per unit.
Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said the purchased vehicles will be used to deliver learning materials to students under modular and online learning.
“Unang-una, 2019 budget iyan, iyong kanilang need was assessed as early as 2016. At ngayon po, kailangang-kailangan po talaga ng DepEd iyan dahil nga po kinakailangan i-deliver ang mga modules sa mga malalayong lugar all over the Philippines,” Roque said in a recent virtual presser.
He added that the acquisition of the service vehicles was subject to public bidding.
“So, bakit po iyan ang brand? Eh, iyan po iyong nanalo sa bidding. Eh talaga naman po lahat ng government procurement dumadaan po iyan sa public bidding, at iyan po iyong pinakamababang responsive bid na nakuha ng DepEd,” according to the Palace official.
Meanwhile, Roque said President Rodrigo Duterte trusts Education Secretary Leonor Briones’ decision to allow the purchase of Strada 4×4 GLS MT trucks.
“Ultimately it’s a matter of trusting the head of office. I trust, the President trusts and the entire Filipino nation trusts Professor Emeritus Leonor Briones. Number one kasangga po natin siya laban po sa korapsiyon. Patuloy po ang ating pagtitiwala kay Professor Briones,” he concluded.
