Hurry up! Duterte asks Congress to pass OFW department bill

By Prince Golez

President Rodrigo Duterte called for swift passage of the bill creating the Department of Overseas Filipinos.

In a taped public address aired over state-run PTV-4 on Tuesday, Duterte urged Congress to fast-track the approval of a measure establishing a new department for overseas Filipino workers.

“I’d like to hurry up Congress in this. One of my proposals during the campaign period was the creation of overseas Filipinos. Iba yung Department of Labor (and Employment), it takes care of the internal, mga trabahante dito, yung nasa labas,” according to the chief executive.

“So, I proposed in the coming months and I hope to come up with a department for overseas workers,” he added.

In his annual State of the Nation address last July, Duterte stressed the need for a new department that will focus solely on OFW-related concerns, saying that the Labor department is already “overworked.”
