Palace to look into conditions of facilities for babies behind bars

By Prince Golez

MalacaƱang will check the conditions of jail facilities in the country following the death of Baby River, a three-month-old infant who was separated from her mother Reina Nasino, a jailed activist, just a month after she was born.

Presidential spokesman Harry Roque said he will ask the Department of the Interior and Local Government if the Manila City Jail had no facilities where detainees can raise their babies while incarcerated.

“We will look into the matter. And of course, we realize that unless convicted, you are presumed innocent and that we will see what reforms can come about because of this experience with this particular incident,” Roque said in a televised briefing Thursday.

“I will personally take steps to inquire into this, knowing that there are some petty obligations that will probably have to be complied with,” he added.

Reina gave birth to her baby on July 1 but a local court denied her request for a hospital stay. River later died of acute respiratory distress syndrome on October 9.
