Duterte on criticism over slow ‘Ulysses’ response: ‘That’s garbage’

By Prince Golez

The local government units (LGUs) should not be blamed for massive destruction brought by typhoon Ulysses in Cagayan Valley, President Rodrigo Duterte said.

Duterte said the LGUs were already prepared even before the typhoon came.

“I do not believe in that. That’s garbage,” the Chief Executive said in a media interview in Camarines Sur Sunday.

“Alam mo, the one in charge sa mga preparations for emergency, long before dumating ‘yung typhoon naka-deploy na ‘yang mga tao dito,” he added.

Meanwhile, Duterte called as “political punchline” the criticisms that aid had been slow in the wake of Ulysses.

“Istorya lang ‘yan. Kailan pa ba na ito tumakbo rin ang gobyerno na mabilis? You go right away and spend money. You land there with the Ombudsman,” he said.

“So give them time to make the proper assessment and all. Saan ang bagal dito? Nandiyan ang pagkain, the housing nandiyan, they are ready to implement. They have the money. Pangpulitika ‘yan sa totoo lang,” he also said.
