The Department of Education (DepEd) has cancelled the bidding for P4.3-million worth of ham and cheese for its Christmas celebration after a blogger exposed it on social media.
In a statement Saturday (November 14), DepEd said the purchase of ham and cheese was “regular procurement” but “inappropriate at this time.”
“We have since reallocated the funds for the needs of those affected by typhoons Rolly and Ulysses and the ongoing COVID-19 effort for our employees,” DepEd Public Affairs Director June Arvin Gudoy said.
Asked when the bidding was cancelled, Gudoy said “today.” He claimed that the bidding documents, dated November 12, were automatically posted on DepEd’s website in the interest of transparency.
“2019 pa yan nabudget for the employees,” Gudoy said.
Based on the bidding documents shared by blogger Tonyo Cruz on Facebook, the approved budget for purchasing ham and cheese for DepEd’s central office was P4,278,000.00
The budget is broken down as follows: P2.982 million for 4,260 pieces of ham or P700 apiece, and P1.296 million for 2,160 pieces of cheese, or P600 each.
