President Rodrigo Duterte stood by Public Secretary Mark Villar despite criticizing the alleged anomalies at the Department of Public Works and Highways.
In a televised Cabinet meeting Monday, Duterte vouched for Villar’s integrity, calling him “an honest man.”
“Si Secretary Villar is an honest man. Not only that he is honest, he has money. May pera siya and I do not question his integrity or loyalty,” according to the Chief Executive.
“If not, bakit nandito pa nga siya sa Cabinet? Meaning to say that kailangan ko siya. I need his expertise, his talent,” he added.
Duterte had ordered the Department of Justice (DOJ) to expand its corruption probe to include the DPWH.
A DOJ-led interagency task force was earlier formed to investigate the alleged massive corruption in the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation.
