Palace attributes drop in virus cases to Red Cross testing halt

By Prince Golez

The drop in last month’s overall number of new coronavirus (Covid-19) infections can be partially attributed to the Philippine Red Cross’ (PRC) suspension of its Covid-19 testing, Malacañang said Wednesday.

The Department of Health earlier reported that the Philippines saw a 25 percent decrease in the number of new Covid-19 cases in October.

“I am sure somehow the action of PRC in stopping their testing somehow contributed because less testing, of course, means [fewer] numbers,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in an interview with CNN Philippines.

But, Roque also cited continued collective efforts to stop the spread of the pandemic.

“I think people know by now what to do to prevent the further spread of the disease and they have been cooperating. Our slogan right now is ‘Ingat buhay para sa Hanapbuhay’ and, I think, people know that they need to observe minimum health standards so that they can go back to work and earn their livelihoods,” he added.

Last month, the PRC stopped conducting Philhealth-funded swab tests after the state health insurer failed to settle its more than P1-billion debt.
