President Rodrigo Duterte may extend the suspension of the termination of the country’s Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) with the United States for another six months, according to Malacañang.
Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque told CNN Philippines that the suspension of the VFA termination is extendible by the Philippines for another half a year.
It can be recalled that Duterte called a six-month suspension for the agreement’s termination last June. He ordered the termination of the military pact after the U.S. canceled the visa of his former police chief, Senator Ronald Dela Rosa.
“That has an option of being further extended by another six months. So, my thinking is, perhaps, the President will invoke the second six-month time to finally abrogate the VFA,” Roque said Wednesday.
“What I am saying is, there is no immediate rush for the President to decide because the notification we sent to the Americans gives them at least one-year leeway before it’s abrogated,” he also said.
