MalacaƱang on Monday defended the designation of Metro Manila police chief Major General Debold Sinas as the new Philippine National Police (PNP) chief, saying his appointment is the prerogative of the President.
“Presidential appointments are really very executive in character. It is a prerogative of the President and he need not make any explanation for his appointment,” according to Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque.
Roque said President Rodrigo Duterte took into consideration Sinas’ track record, particularly his contribution to the administration’s campaign against illegal drugs.
“But nonetheless, tinignan siyempre ni Presidente yung track record ng kanyang appointee at matagal nang sinasabi ni President na talagang si bagong PNP chief Sinas ay napakalaking na ang naitulong sa kanyang war on drugs,” he added.
When asked on Duterte’s marching orders for the new police chief, Roque said: “Siyempro po, ipagpatuloy par in ang war on drugs at ipagpatuloy pa rin ang mga gains na nakamit natin sa larangan ng peace and order na pinatunayan nung survey ng Gallup poll na No. 12 tayo sa buong daigdig na pinaka-safe na lugar, sang-ayon na rin sa ating mga mamamayan.”
Sinas became controversial in May following his controversial birthday party that allegedly violated strict rules on mass gathering.
