‘UP produces the most radical, woke, creative:’ Remulla asks Duterte to reconsider halting alma mater funding

“The Philippines needs UP. UP also needs the Philippines.”

Cavite Governor Jonvic Remulla is taking up the cudgels for his alma mater the University of the Philippines (UP) after President Duterte threatened to halt funding of the state university.

Remulla wrote an open letter to President Duterte, asking him to reconsider his plans to cut UP funding. The governor, in his latest social media post, defended that the UP continues to produce the “best and brightest” in the country.

“I pray that you reconsider the threat of defunding UP. It has 24,000 students many of which will contribute to society, the same way as the leaders we have today,” he said.

“Surely their dissent is loud and noticeable but you have to understand: That is the beauty of the University. It brings together great minds and imbeds in them a burning spirit wanting the country to be their version of a better and most progressive society,” he said.

Remulla said UP also produces “the most radical, the most ‘woke’ and the most creative.” “It remains one of the few bastions of critical thinking and liberalism not just in the country, but in the world,” he said.

He went to identify several politikos who graduated from UP, including Senators Francis Pangilinan, Juan Migue Zubiri, Nancy Binay, Sonny Angara, Pia Cayetano, Grace Poe, Franklin Drilon, Richard Gordon and Cynthia Villar.

He also said Senator Imee Marcos also studied in UP although they were not batchmates. Other UP alumni are Sorsogon Governor Francis Escudero, Antique Rep. Loren Legarda,

“The institution made me a better person. It made me want a better Philippines,” Remulla said.

President Duterte recently threatened to stop the funding of UP if the students prefer to stage protest actions instead of attending classes. Duterte also suspected that the communist rebels were recruiting students from the state university.
