There have been almost 30 persons deprived liberty (PDL) at Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) prisons who have died from the COVID-19 virus this year, Justice Undersecretary Emmeline Aglipay-Villar revealed on Wednesday (Dec. 30).
Based on BuCor records, Villar cited that as of Dec. 15 there have been 27 PDLs who have died from COVID-19.
The undersecretary noted that the 27 PDLs were among the total 441 inmates at BuCor prisons who got infected with the disease.
Among those who died include high-profile inmate Jaybee Sebastian who has been convicted in 2009 for carjacking and kidnap-for-ransom.
Another high-profile inmate who also caught COVID-19 is rape-slay convict former Calauan, Laguna mayor Antonio Sanchez who got hospitalized but eventually recovered.
