Just shut up! NUPL to Duterte: Don’t link people to crime without proof

President Rodrigo Duterte should no longer be disclosing the names of persons for their alleged involvement in any kind offenses, National Union of People’s Lawyers (NUPL) president Edre Olalia.

Olalia pointed this out after Duterte named nine former and current legislators allegedly involved in corruption based on the report submitted by the Presidential Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC).

“It is not prudent, let alone fair, for anybody to publicly and perfunctorily link anyone to an incriminatory list -whether it be in the form of a narcolist, redtagging or about corruption – without due process,” Olalia said.

“The damage and danger to one’s reputation, occupation, profession or livelihood, and worse, even one’s life, liberty and security

are irreparable and unquantifiable,” he added.

Olalia lamented that whatever Duterte says will be “deemed by his alter egos, certain servile public officials and zealous followers as conclusory proof, gospel truth or virtual marching orders makes it even unsettling as it undermines the justice system and disregards many basic rights, notwithstanding any confusing disclaimers that do not provide solace.”

Those who have been named by Duterte were Occidental Mindoro Rep. Josephine Sato, former Ifugao Rep. Teddy Baguilat Jr, Quezon City 5th District Rep. Alfred Vargas, Misamis Occidental 2nd District Rep. Henry Oaminal, Isabela 4th District Rep. Alyssa Tan, Northern Samar 1st District Rep. Paul Daza, Quezon 4th District Rep. Angelina Tan, ACT-CIS party-list Rep. Eric Yap, and Bataan 1st District Rep. Geraldine Roman.
