Malacañang said it will continue to monitor the performance of the country’s telecommunication companies in terms of internet speed and access.
While noting improvement in telco services since the President warned them in July to provide better services, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque expressed his dismay over the Philippines’ ranking in the recent Speedtest Global Index that placed the country at 34th spot in Asia in terms of mobile broadband speed.
“Hindi po tayo masaya na tayo ay nasa gitna ng ranking. Ayon sa speed test global index internet speed for mobile broadband improved by 94.35 percent; from 7.44 Mbps in July 2016 to 14.46 Mbps in February 2019 – pang number 33 pa po tayo,” Roque said in a televised briefing Thursday.
“At noong nagalit ang Presidente, ayon sa speed test global index October 2020, pagdating sa mobile broadband speed ay pantatlumpu’t apat na puwesto or number 34 ang Pilipinas, halos wala pong pinagbago,” he added.
The Palace official said the Philippines should at least be at par with Vietnam and Thailand, nations that are of similar qualities as the Philippines in terms of economic development, which are ranked 18th and 16th, respectively.
“Patuloy pa rin ang mga reklamo tungkol sa serbisyo o walang internet sa remote communities. Hindi natin mararating ang world-class status kung may ganitong mga aberya sa mga serbisyong natuturing na basic sa sektor ng telekomunikasyon. Patuloy ang ating pagmu-monitor sa ating mga telcos,” Roque concluded.
