Duterte to speak at UN coronavirus session

President Rodrigo Duterte will participate in a special session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly on the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic from December 3 to 4, Malacañang said.

He is expected to deliver the Philippine statement at the virtual UN General Assembly today, Thursday.

The Office of the President said Duterte will further amplify his call for global solidarity to overcome the pandemic.

“Of particular concern for President Duterte are universal access to anti-Covid-19 technologies and products and the need for global efforts to ensure availability of safe and effective vaccines to peoples of developing nations,” the statement read.

At the 74th session of the UN General Assembly last September, Duterte stressed that access to safe and effective vaccines “must not be denied nor withheld. It should be made available to all, rich and poor nations alike, as a matter of policy.”

In joining the collective voice of partners in ASEAN and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), Duterte said the Covid-19 vaccine “must be considered a global public good.”

The special session, first proposed by the NAM, where the Philippines is a member, is being held pursuant to Resolution 75/4 adopted by the General Assembly on November 5. It was first proposed by the NAM

It aims to reaffirm the key role of the UN in maintaining global order especially in the face of an unprecedented global health threat.
