MTRCB exec: Netflix appealing removal of ‘Pine Gap’ episodes over China’s 9-dash line

Streaming giant Netflix has asked the Philippine government to reconsider its order to remove two episodes of the political drama “Pine Gap,” which showed a map asserting China’s sweeping claim over the South China Sea.

Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) Executive Director Benjo Benaldo told One News’ “The Chiefs” Wednesday (November 3) that Netflix filed a motion for reconsideration over the removal of “Pine Gap” episodes featuring China’s nine-dash line.

Benaldo, however, said he cannot discuss details of Netflix’s appeal due to the sub judice rule.

MTRCB ordered Netflix to remove the two “Pine Gap” episodes following a request for review from the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).

The regulatory body said in its decision that it has “the responsibility to counter China’s aggressive actions in the West Philippine Sea to assert the Philippines’ territorial integrity.”

MTRCB said “the portrayal of the illegal nine-dash line in Pine Gap is no accident as it was consciously designed and calculated to specifically convey a message that China’s nine-dash line legitimately exists.”

Benaldo said MTRCB will continue regulating content on Netflix despite the challenges of monitoring content on the streaming platform.

“We cannot watch everything that’s why we rely on our deputies or complaints of the public. We don’t have the capacity to regulate everything,” he said.
