Kupal moves! Velasco removes Cayetano ally from leadership post sans notice

House Speaker Lord Allan Jay Velasco continues to settle score with allies of former Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano, two months after winning the heated speakership fight.

On the House’s last session day for 2020 Wednesday (December 16), Velasco removed as chairman of the House public accounts committee Anakalusugan party-list Rep. Mike Defensor, a key Cayetano ally.

Defensor was replaced as committee chairman by Probinsyano Ako party-list Rep. Jose “Bonito” Singson Jr.

In a statement, Defensor lambasted Velasco for not even having the courtesy to tell him in person about his removal as committee chairman.

“Speaker Lord Velasco is the worse. He didn’t even have the courtesy to talk with me even as we had a short meeting last week as regards the investigation to be conducted by the Committee on Public Accounts. He even requested me that we all suspend investigations until January which I respectfully agreed to,” he said.

Defensor said he wouldn’t have resisted had Velasco told him he will be replaced. The manner that the Speaker resorted to, however, leaves much to be desired.

“I would not have resisted if he had asked me to give up the position as I have said in the past. Civility and leadership dictates that even as we have differences in the past leadership fight, that we treat each other in a respectable manner. I am comforted by the thought that clear lines have been drawn and in the spirit of the season, I wish Speaker a Merry Christmas. See you next year,” he said.
