LGUs told to extend payment deadline for local business tax, fees

By Prince Golez

The national government is urging local government units (LGUs) to extend deadlines of payment for local business fees to small low-profit enterprises.

On Friday, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said the Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF) requested LGUs to provide regulatory relief measures for business establishments that have been affected by the prolonged coronavirus (Covid-19) lockdown.

“The IATF likewise appealed to LGUs to provide regulatory relief assistance, such as but not limited to deferment of payment of deadlines for local government business fees, to micro, small, and medium business establishments,” Roque said in a statement released to reporters.

“Abovementioned business establishments were those which were not permitted to operate or adversely affected by the restrictions imposed under the different community quarantine classifications,” he added.

Due to strict stay-at-home rules during the peak of Covid-19, most business operations in the Philippines shut down, leaving hundreds if not thousands of Filipinos jobless.
