July-September 2021 pa darating: Moderna, Arcturus ready to supply up to 25M COVID-19 vaccines to PH- envoy

Two more American pharmaceutical firms are ready to supply the Philippines with up to 25 million COVID-19 vaccines, the country’s top envoy to the United States said Friday (December 18).

Philippine Ambassador to US Jose Manuel “Babe” Romualdez said the vaccines from Moderna and Arcturus could arrive in the Philippines starting the third quarter of 2021 if the national government find their proposals acceptable.

“We are hoping our government will consider the promising candidates of Moderna and Aarcturus for inclusion in our country’s pool of anti-COVID vaccines,” he said in a statement.

A US panel of experts voted on Thursday (December 17) to recommend emergency approval of Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is expected to grant emergency use authorization (EUA) to the vaccine soon, paving the way for its shipment as soon as this weekend.

Romualdez’s announcement came at the heels of the allegation that Health Secretary Francisco Duque III dragged his feet in securing the purchase of at least 10 million doses of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine, which was due to arrive in January 2021.

Senator Panfilo Lacson said Duque “failed to work on the necessary documentary requirement, namely, the confidentiality disclosure agreement (CDA),” causing the Philippines to miss out on the early procurement of the vaccine.

COVID-19 vaccine czar Carlito Galvez Jr. said it will be the COVID-19 vaccines from Chinese pharmaceutical firm Sinovac and Russia’s Gamaleya that will arrive first in the country in March 2021.
