Mandatory face shield for cyclists may lead to accidents, Pia Cayetano says

Senator Pia Cayetano is opposed to the government’s mandatory use of face shields for cyclists and joggers.

Cayetano, a biking enthusiast, warned that forcing cyclists to wear face shields may lead to accidents on the road.

“As a cyclist, I’m very concerned about the safety of fellow cyclists being required to use face shields. This could drastically impair their vision and perception of space, which may lead to accidents,” she said in a Facebook post.

The senator joined the clamor of the biking community in showing concern about wearing face shield while biking.

She asked the government’s task force led by Health Secretary Francisco Duque III to exempt cyclists from wearing face shields. Joggers should also be exempted from the face shield rule provide social distancing is observed, she said.

“I ask the IATF to consider excepting cyclists from wearing face shields. Moreover, recognizing the role of exercise in promoting mental and physical health, I also ask the IATF to exempt joggers from the requirement when jogging in open spaces, provided they observe social distancing measures,” she said.

The Department of Health earlier announced it may consider exempting solo-riding cyclists from the face shield role in public places. The government task force has yet to issue a decision on the appeals against the use of face shield for cyclists and joggers.

A safe and blessed #wednesday morning to all! As a cyclist, I’m very concerned about the safety of fellow cyclists…
