Trillanes says Duterte can’t get away from ICC inquiry on drug war: ‘Nanginginig na ‘yan sa takot’

The day of reckoning is near.

Former Senator Antonio Trillanes IV is certain that President Duterte and his cohorts will be held accountable for the alleged crimes related to the deadly war on drugs.

Trillanes said he was sure Duterte dreads any International Criminal Court inquiry on his drug war despite his attempts to ignore it.

ICC prosecutor Fatou Bensouda said there is a “reasonable basis to believe” that crimes against humanity were committed amid Duterte’s crackdown on drugs in the country. The court will decide next year if it will pursue a full investigation of the alleged drug war abuses.

“The time for reckoning is near for Mr. Duterte, his cohorts and enablers. They have to answer for the thousands of Filipino lives killed during his brutal war on drugs,” Trillanes said.

“Duterte may try to ignore the jurisdiction of ICC over him, but deep inside he knows that he cannot get away from this one. Having profiled Duterte, I am sure nanginginig na ‘yan sa takot,” he said.

In 2018, Duterte pulled out the country’s membership from the ICC after Bensouda opened a preliminary examination into the alleged drug-linked killings in the country. Duterte blasted the alleged outrageous attacks by UN officials and violations of due process by the ICC. The country’s withdrawal from the ICC was formalized last year.
