What a joke! Zubiri: Sinovac’s 50% efficacy ‘unacceptable,’ ‘total waste of funds’

Senate Majority Leader Migz Zubiri on Friday said the 50 percent efficacy rate of the vaccine developed by Chinese pharmaceutical Sinovac Biotech, which the Philippine government intends to use for the mass immunization program, was “totally unacceptable” and a waste of public funds.

“That means there’s a 50/50 chance of you getting Covid even after being vaccinated is a joke! Again it means one out of two Filipinos could still be infected which is delikado lalo na sa senior citizens, Frontliners and those with co-morbidities,” he told reporters in a Viber message.

“Totally unacceptable period!! Buti pa yung mga Russian vaccines that have a 91 percent efficacy rate,” Zubiri said.

He said the government should be looking at other vaccines with better performance.

“We appeal to our Task force leaders to look at the effectiveness of the Vaccines rather than political or geo-political reasons. Safety of our people should come first not the feelings of our Neighboring Friends,” Zubiri said.

The Senate w”ill closely monitor the deals made through our oversight function and we have already constituted the Committee of the Whole to hear out the roll out plans on our Government starting the 1st week of January,” he added.

“Hindi kami papayag na ibibigay sa ating mga kababayans yung mga bakunang palpak at walang silbi sa pag bigay proteksyon sa Covid-19,” Zubiri said.

He noted that Pfizer has a high efficacy rate of 95 percent; “however yung cold storage requirements niya ay napaka hirap sundin as we have very little facilities that can store at -70C.”

“However there are others that have a high Efficacy rate like Astra Zeneca with at least 75 percent efficiency at a storage need of only -2c to -8c lang na marami tayong refrigeration facilities for that,” Zubiri said.
