Duterte suspends PhilHealth rate hike: Make it easy for everybody at this time

By Prince Golez

President Rodrigo Duterte has ordered the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) to defer its planned increase in premium contribution rates.

In his weekly address on Monday night, Duterte told PhilHealth chief Dante Gierran to postpone the members’ contribution hike for 2021.

“At this time of our life, may I just suggest to the PhilHealth chairman, si Dante Gierran… Huwag muna ngayon,” according to him.

“No increase in contributions. I will look for the money to fill it up. Maghanap tayo ng pera. Anyway, that is the job of the government to make it easy for everybody at this time,” he also said.

Last month, PhilHealth explained the implementation of contribution rate hike and adjustments in income ceiling for next year is meant to “ensure sufficient funding for the health care of its 110 million members as mandated by Republic Act No. 11223 or the Universal Health Care Law.”

The premium rate is set to increase from the current 3.00 percent of the monthly income of direct contributor to 3.50 percent.
