From Trillanes’ comrade to Duterte appointee: MMDA chairman Danny Lim dies, 65

Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chairman Danny Lim has died, Malacanang confirmed Wednesday (January 6). He was 65.

In a statement, Malacanang said Lim died before 8 a.m. The cause of his death has not been disclosed.

On December 29, 2020, Lim announced that he tested positive for COVID-19.

A member of the Philippine Military Academy Makatarungan Class 1978, Lim was involved in the failed 1989 coup attempt against then-President Corazon Aquino.

On November 29, 2007, he joined former senator Antonio Trillanes IV and other rebel soldiers in calling for then-President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s ouster in a standoff at the Peninsula Manila hotel in Makati. They were subsequently charged with rebellion and jailed.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines in 2010 granted Lim temporary freedom after four years in detention. Under the Aquino administration, he served as Deputy Commissioner for Intelligence of the Bureau of Customs from September 15, 2011 to July 23, 2013.

Lim was appointed as MMDA chairman by president Rodrigo Duterte on May 22, 2017 as MMDA chief, replacing acting chairman and general manager Thomas Orbos.
