Government forms body to monitor coronavirus variants

In compliance with President Rodrigo Duterte’s directive, the government’s coronavirus (Covid-19) task force has created a Technical Working Group on Covid-19 Variants, Malacañang announced Wednesday.

In a statement released to reporters, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said the Technical Working Group will monitor and identify the occurrence of new mutated strains of Covid-19 in the country.

They will also provide policy recommendations to the Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases on the appropriate response regarding these variants, according to Roque.

Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Singh-Vergeire will chair the Technical Working Group while Executive Director Jaime Montoya of the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development will serve as co-chair.

Other members include Dr. Anna Ong-Lim, Dr. Marissa Alejandria, and Dr. Edsel Maurice Salvana of the Department of Health Technical Advisory Group; Dr. Celia Carlos of the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine; Dr. Eva Maria Cutiongco-dela Paz of the University of the Philippines National Institutes of Health; Dr. Cynthia Saloma of the University of the Philippines – Philippine Genome Center; and Dr. John Wong of Epimetrics.
