Former Vice President Jojo Binay has asked the government to show leniency and compassion for vendors during the coronavirus pandemic.
Binay made the appeal after questioning the harsh arrest of a street vendor by task force members engaged in clearing operations in Parañaque City. The incident was caught on tape which already gone viral online.
The former vice president defended the vendor who was manhandled by a team of Parañaque’s street clearing agents. The enforcers should have asked the vendor to move instead of using force.
“Nasaan ang awa at malasakit? ‘Yung vendor nagtatrabaho ng marangal kahit may pandemya at malaki ang posibilidad na sya ay magka-COVID,” he said.
“The least government enforcers can do is ask him to move and not confiscate his wares. The times call for leniency and compassion,” he said.
In the video, several enforcers were seen tackling the vendor to the ground when he refused to surrender his kariton during the street clearing operations in Parañaque. They tried to handcuff the vendor while he was faced down on the ground.
The incident is reportedly now under investigation.
