The government extended the imposition of temporary travel ban on foreigners coming from areas with confirmed cases of the new coronavirus (Covid-19) variant until January 31, Malacañang announced Friday.
In a video, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) on Emerging Infectious Diseases approved the recommendation to extend travel restrictions until month’s end.
The travel ban covers the United Kingdom, Denmark, Ireland, Japan, Australia, Israel, The Netherlands, The People’s Republic of China including the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Switzerland, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, Lebanon, Singapore, Sweden, South Korea, South Africa, Canada, Spain, United States of America, Portugal, India, Finland, Norway, Jordan, Brazil, Austria, Pakistan, Jamaica, Luxembourg, and Oman.
Meanwhile, the IATF has directed the Department of Transportation to strictly implement issuances against airlines that allow the boarding of passengers who are prohibited from entering the Philippines.
Roque also said contact tracing efforts will be strengthened to include third-generation contacts for known new variant cases.
“Lahat ng matutukoy na close contacts ay kailangang sumailalim sa mahigpit na facility-based 14-day quarantine, samantalang ang natirang contacts mula sa flight manifest ay papayuhan sumunod sa appropriate quarantine protocols,” he added.
On Wednesday, the Department of Health announced that it detected the new Covid-19 variant in a male resident of Quezon City who traveled to Dubai on December 27 and arrived back in the Philippines on January 7.
