Ping wants to verify: Did PH waste China joint venture offer to produce vaccines in PH?

Did China-based Sinopharm propose a joint venture to produce potentially cheaper COVID vaccines in the Philippines, only for Philippine authorities to drop the ball again?

Sen. Panfilo Lacson said Sunday he wants to verify this with the officials concerned at Monday’s hearing of the Senate Committee of the Whole on the matter.

“Gusto ko ma-confirm sa kanila bukas na nag-offer ang Sinopharm na makipag-joint venture, makipag-partner sa isang kilalang pharmaceutical company,” he said in an interview on DZBB radio.

Citing his information, Lacson said the letter from China Pharmaceuticals, which makes Sinopharm vaccines, was sent to Health Secretary Francisco Duque III’s office in May 2020.

The offer was supposedly to enter into a joint venture with a Philippine company, possibly Unilab or Pascual Laboratories.

However, he noted that “mula noon hanggang ngayon wala pa ring nangyayari.”

“Kung pwede makipag-joint sila dito gagawin ang clinical trials, research, mismong faciltiies na galing sa China, ang technology dadalhin dito. Mas malaking mura sa atin yan kasi dito na gagawin ang vaccine. Mukhang hindi natugunan yan kaya di natuloy yan,” Lacson lamented.
