Sa Mindanao lang malakas! Pulse Asia downplays Sara Duterte’s lead in presidential survey

Support for the possible presidential run of Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte is “not that high” even if she topped Pulse Asia’s recent survey on prospective candidates, the pollster’s president said Monday (January 4).

Ronald Holmes told ANC’s “Matters of Fact” that a closer scrutiny of survey results showed that a large part of the support for Duterte’s candidacy comes from Mindanao, their family’s bailiwick.

“It’s basically not exactly a high electoral support for the President’s daughter,” he said.

Duterte got a 58% voter preference in Mindanao, followed by 29% in Visayas, 16% in Metro Manila and 12% in Balance Luzon.

“So, if you have majority support coming from Mindanao and eventually netting 1 out of 4 support on the national level, it means we can expect [that] the forthcoming election will still be largely dependent on spatial or geographical voting,” Holmes said.

Trailing behind Duterte in second place were former senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and Senator Grace Poe, with a voter preference rating of 14%. They’re followed by Manila Mayor Isko Moreno with 12% and Senator Manny Pacquiao with 10%.

Duterte has asked pollsters to exclude her name from the choice of possible presidential candidates in surveys.

Pulse Asia conducted the survey between November 23, 2020 and December 2, 2020.
