A former ABS-CBN executive has criticized former Negros Oriental Rep. Albee Benitez for allegedly failing to do his homework before producing the variety show, Sunday Noontime Live, for TV5.
In an interview with PEP.ph, former Star Magic chairman emeritus Johnny Manahan said Benitez approached him sometime last year with an offer to direct a variety show that will compete against ABS-CBN’s highly successful ASAP Natin ‘To.
Manahan said he told Benitez to expect spending around P3 million per episode for SNL.
The former ABS-CBN executive said he was shocked when Benitez recently announced SNL’s cancellation due to poor ratings.
“’You know, I’m really losing money and the reality is we don’t generate a lot of money per spot because mahina ang signal ng Channel 5,’” Manahan recalled Benitez as saying.
He said he would’ve warned the former lawmaker about the massive loss he would incur in producing SNL if he were involved in the show’s business side.
Manahan said he was only concerned about SNL’s creative aspects, while Benitez took care of the finances.
“Alam niya iyon, e, so he should have done the math. Hindi ba? Alam niya kung magkano ang spots. E, ayun. Somehow, he didn’t do the math, so tira lang siya nang tira, fund the show,” he said.
“Hindi ba dapat he should’ve done the math? ‘I would’ve told you, talagang malulugi ka doon sa three point something,’” Manahan added.
