Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo on Saturday claimed that former National Covid-19 Task Force adviser Dr. Tony Leachon wanted to replace Health Secretary Francisco Duque III.
In his commentary show Counterpoint aired on state-run PTV-4, Panelo said Leachon sent him a letter of application for the said post.
“Tanggi ka pa nang tanggi na wala kang plano o gustong maging opisyal ng gobyerno,” the abogado said.
“Hindi mo pa maamin. Eh sa akin ka nag padala ng application mo. Gusto mo maging Secretary of Department of Health. Gusto mo pa yata ipakita ko sa screen ang application mo,” he went on.
Prior to this, Panelo called the health reform expert out for “creating more doubts” in the government efforts against the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.
Last month, Leachon denied having future ambitions to be a public official.
Spokesman Harry Roque previously said that President Rodrigo Duterte repeatedly cursed the physician in his speeches due to his criticism of Covid-19 response.
Duterte, according to Roque, alleged that Leachon only wanted a position in the government.
“I dreamt of serving the government before but I have no future ambitions to be a public official. I’d like to spend my sunset years with the family, closest friends, and doing advocacy work,” Leachon clarified on Twitter.
