Trekking Masungi Georeserve: Hontiveros cherishes ‘ultimate plantita moment’

Senator Risa Hontiveros is helping protect nature while enjoying the great outdoors.

The senator recently left the asphalt jungle and went on a hike at the popular Masungi Georeserve in Rizal.

Hontiveros and her team took the “Legacy Trail,” a three to four hour trail that highlights the reforestation work in the area. The group also planted some native trees as part of the restoration work.

“Last week ay inakyat namin ang @masungigeoreserve sa Baras, Rizal. 🌳🌱” she wrote on Instagram, sharing photos of the georeserve visit.

“Doon kami naghike sa ‘Legacy Trail’ at nagkaroon ng ultimate ‘plantita’ at ‘plantito’ moment! Nagtanim kami ng mga native na puno na parte ng muling pagpapalago ng bagong kagubatan sa Masungi,” she said.

Hontiveros is concerned that land grabbing and quarrying operations are putting at risk the conservation areas in the province of Rizal. She also warned of possible intense floods Rizal and Metro Manila if the reforestation efforts are derailed.

“Sa kabila ng instagrammable view at napakagandang tanawin, matindi ang banta ng pagkawasak ng georeserve dahil may mga sapilitan nangangamkam ng lupa at nagka-quarry doon,” she said.

“Kapag hindi ito naagapan, mas matitinding pagbaha ang pwedeng maranasan ng mga bayan mula Rizal hanggang Marikina at Metro Manila,” she said.

Nature conservation also means taking care of the community, according to Hontiveros.

“Ang pag-aalaga kay Inang Kalikasan ay pag-aalaga rin sa ating sarili, sa ating pamilya at sa buong komunidad,” she said.
