36% drop: BI collects only P5.8B from foreigners in 2020

The Bureau of Immigration’s (BI) income decreased by 36 percent in 2020 due to the COVID-19 virus pandemic, BI Commissioner Jaime Morente said.

“We anticipated our revenues to decrease due to the pandemic,” said Morente in a statement.

“With more foreign nationals going out of the country than going in, we were able to collect less revenue from visa applications,” he added.

Morente said the BI posted a P5.88 billion in revenues in 2020.

He said this is 36.1 percent less than the P9.3 billion in revenues in 2019.

The commissioner noted BI transactions were suspended for more than two months after the government declared a lockdown in March last year.

Despite this, Morente expressed hope that the BI’s revenue collection efforts to gradually return to normal this year as the country awaits the arrival of the COVID-19 vaccine and once international travel restrictions are gradually lifted.
