Ba’t binabalik tokhang? Makabayan bloc slams Cordillera authorities’ campaign vs leftists

By Billy Begas

The Makabayan bloc lambasted the Regional Law Enforcement Coordinating Committee (RLECC) Resolution No.4 series of 2021 ordering law enforcement agencies in Cordillera region to implement a “tokhang” campaign against left-leaning individuals as part of a counterinsurgency campaign.

House Deputy Minority leader and Bayan Muna Rep. Carlos Isagani Zarate said the move is patently unconstitutional because they want everybody to stop being critical to shortcomings of the government.

“It is very ironic that as we are to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the first EDSA People Uprising where basic freedoms were again won, militarists hawks in the Duterte administration strive to kill those hard won freedoms,” said Zarate.

Zarate expressed fear that the tokhang-type operation against activists may lead to an unprecedented number of killings and illegal arrests against critics of the administration.

Aside from left-leaning groups, Zarate said the resolution also targets media, government workers, the Church and almost anyone who questions the wrongdoings of the government or just simply speaking the truth.

Zarate also linked the move to the upcoming elections to cripple the machinery of the Makabayan bloc.

Assistant Minority Leader and ACT Teachers Rep. France Castro said the move is one way to silence the opposition.

“This is actually another way to chill people from speaking up and participating in discussions about what is going on, what is going wrong with our country,” said Castro adding that the order is unconstitutional.
