By Prince Golez

President Rodrigo Duterte has approved the creation of a sub-task group to go after smugglers, hoarders, and profiteers of agricultural products.

Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles said Duterte made the approval during the 51st Cabinet meeting in Malacañang on Wednesday.

The sub-task group on economic intelligence will be led by the Department of Agriculture (DA) and the Department of Trade and Industry, Nograles also said.

Members of the unit also include the Department of Justice, Department of the Interior and local Government, National Bureau of Investigation, Philippine National Police, Bureau of Customs, Philippine Competition Commission, National Security Council, and the National Intilligence Coordinating Agency.

“Kugn merong mga grupo o negosyante na pinagsasamantalahan ang pandemiya para pagkakitaan ang taumbayan hindi po ito palalampasin,” according to the Palace official.

Nograles said Duterte also greenlighted the DA proposal to expand the minimum access volume (MAV) to cover the projected deficit in pork for the year.

“As for the projections of pork supplies for this year, the Department fo Agriculture estimates that with a demand of 1,618,355 metric tons and the projections of the 2021 supplies, we will need to begin the process of reviewing the MAV,” according to him.
